Got it? Check!

Having a checklist is always helpful when going to the grocery store, running errands, and yes, also in photography. I had a unique experience this last weekend which illustrates why having a checklist in photography - and probably in life - is a good idea. My wife and I went out of town to attend a wedding last weekend, and I seized the opportunity to deviate from the usual landscape, flora, urban photography I’ve been learning about to try my hand at wedding photography. So…I packed my meager gear together in a carry-on bag and headed up to New Jersey.

Before I left for the airport to head up, I did a mental check of all my inventory of gear:

  • Camera - check!
  • Lens #1 - check!
  • Lens #2 - check!
  • memory cards - check!
  • Battery - check!
  • Charger - check!

So we get up there to discover the hired photographer called in sick and sent in a replacement - a student at the local college - in his stead. Nice girl, and nice gear (2 10D’s with a fisheye on one and a 28-90 zoom on the other, two speedlights, batteries, and bag). But she didn’t have my 70-300 zoom! I saw the opportunity to take some shots that the photographer would never get and became a paparazzi! I left the wedding with probably close to 300 shots (and found I surpassed the photographer in total image count). While I did glance at my LCD, I tried not to chimp and saved most shots for review later - you never know which one will turn out to be a keeper. Everyone got that? Check!
During this whole time, the bar staff had instructions from the bride’s parents to never let a drink get empty (open bar obviously). After my Nth beer, I finally told the guy serving our table I was all set, and thanks for everything. So the reception ends, and as we’re leaving, a staff member runs out to me with the lens cap for one of my lenses. Clearly, I was not operating at 100%. Oh well, I had all my gear, right? Check! I tumbled into the rental car and a sober attendee got us back to the house safely.

The next morning we had to get up ungodly early to catch our flight, so I roll out of bed, strip the sheets and fold up the sofa before grabbing everything in sight and stumbling in a daze to the airport. I finally made my flight (spouse was on a different flight) after a cancellation and pulled a magazine out to read. I promptly fell asleep dropping my magazine on the floor in front of me. When I woke, the plane was landing in Charlotte. I picked the errant magazine up, tiredly stuffed it into the seat back in front of me, and started shaking my head awake. Now for the 3 hour drive home.

As we’re driving home, my wife decides to take a sneak peak at all the shots. She quickly sifts through all the shots on card #2, and asks me for card #1. I try to remember where I stuffed it in the bag and cannot, for the life of me, remember. The sinking feeling hits me like a wave - I did not do my checklist! My wife starts peppering me with questions, all of which I honestly must answer “I don’t remember”. So, we get on the phone and start calling everyone on the planet, the car rental company, the reception hall, the family of the house where we stayed - even the airline. Nothing doing. After a confirmation that the card was not at either the club or the car company and hesitant replies of “Sorry I can’t find it” my heart sinks lower, even briefly considering the other photog “found” the card. It’s gone now, right? Check! Resigned to learn from the experience, I go buy a new memory card, vowing to always use my checklist when I depart for and from any shoot.

There is a happy ending to this story though, as my wife’s friend roused us out of bed at 7am this morning with a phone call, announcing her mom found the card! (Apparently, it had fallen down underneath the couch when I went to fold it up - must have fallen out of my pants pocket when I heartily crashed at 2am!) It is en route today via FedEx, insured to the gills, with a tracking number. We also have two new permanent members on our Christmas card list!

So…did everyone enjoy that? Got it? Check!

Shoot for the Stars!!!

The well-known Perseid Shower that happens every summer will apparently be inhibited by a waning gibbeous moon (whatever that means), but fear not sky-watchers. There are some other lesser known meteor showers that happen every year which peak beginning tonight and through August 20th for those interested in the night skies. (These make great photo ops too!) According to the website www.space.com, there are 6 other meteor showers that occur every year that do not receive anywhere near the attention the Perseid Shower does, but offer equally exciting opportunities for viewing and photo enjoyment. So…starting tonight, mark your calendars, get out there and look up to the skies to catchall the excitement. The article on www.space.com that covers the minor showers is here: Summer Meteor Showers and there is also a basic tutorial on how to shoot space photography here: How to Shoot Space Photography

One way to beat the heat

If these shots don’t make you thirsty, they might at least make you think of being cooler, since they are “coolers” of sorts! :)

Local News…

The upcoming shoots for both this weekend (unscheduled) and August 19th (scheduled) make the local paper today!  Surf over to the Post and Courier’s local news page here to check it out:  We made the news

A few wrinkles to sort out though:

1.  The SCPG was not founded this month as indicated in the article, we’ve actually been around on the web for about 6 months now.

2.  The August 19th shoot starts at 7am, not 7:30.

Otherwise, a fun and exciting foray for us, with thanks going out to Harriet McCleod from the P&C for helping to put us on the map.  A link to the GMLc shoudl be forthcoming on the blog site as a courtesy for her help in increasing our visibility to potential and future photogs! :)

Online Printing Services

Chuck Boyd from over at Chuckography made a recent comment here about using Snapfish that reminded me of a great review of online photo services I read recently in a photo magazine. I went back and trolled through my stack of mags (now my wife knows why I keep these handy references!) and found the article.

Basically, they (and by “they”, I mean Popular Photography in their May 2006 issue) took 10 of the more popular online photo printing services and rated each on a scale of 1-6 in 6 different categories: print quality, price, ease of use, turnaround time, storage policy, and poster prints. I took the liberty of compiling a little web page that hits the highlights of the article, and computed an overall score by taking an average of all areas measured. For example, Adoramapix ranked a 6 for print quality, 4 for price, 3 for ease of use, 6 for turnaround time, 4 for storage policy, and 6 for poster prints. The average score for all these is a score of 4.8. The full results of their reviews can be found here: Online Printing Service Reviews

Impromptu Shoot - Saturday July 29th

A few of the SCPG crew have been getting out and about on a regular basis and have planned an outing for this coming weekend.  It will be an afternoon outing at Boone Hall Plantation followed by some sunset shots over at the Pitt Street Bridge.  I think there is also a late lunch planned as well.  Check out the forums to get more information if you would like to join up with the photogs for an afternoon of what I am sure will be a lot of fun!

Photo Happy

In keeping with the theme of the SCPG Blog - here are some shots from one of our “walkabouts” (shoots) that we took downtown last fall. The upcoming shoot in August will be in the same general area, so think of these as incentive shots to join us. It was a fun time, and a great way to learn new shooting tips, tricks and techniques. Anyway, w/out further ado:

Planet Low Country

Yes, you read that right, I am calling the new incarnation the Planet Low Country (PLC for short), is up and running full force, aggregating all our blogs together automatically. This, in conjunction with Jared’s planet shall do nicely to give everyone in the Low Country a central place to visit and check on updates around the area from their latest favorite blog sites. I was starting on doing my part to contribute when a nasty succession of hardware failures by my hosting provider, compounded by human errors on their end (remember, it’s never my fault!), left me totally without a connection even to my content for management and updates. (Really, it wasn’t my fault…) Then, as I struggled in communicating with them, work also had some fun times with heat-realted power outages. Thus, it’s been a few days… Anyway, I had been thinking on an even larger scale aggregator to include all of South Carolina! Yes, that’s right, the ultimate contradiction in terms: a Planet South Carolina - where the entire state could be sectioned off by area (Low Country, Islands, Midlands, Upstate, etc.) with aggregation happening by region. Well, the domain has now propagated so hopefully with the help of Jared, this should soon become a reality as well. Thoughts on this are welcome as well! You may resume your regularly scheduled surfing. Oh, and for the visual POTD - here is a shot from one of the sunrise shoots last fall, courtesy of yours truly!
