New Article Added

In an ongoing effort to provide current and informative information to the readers of the SCPG blog, a new article has been written and posted under the Articles section. This article discusses various factors to consider prior to converting your digital images to printed images. Even more exciting though is the permission that PCPhoto has given us to re-print their articles (which were the primary basis for this essay) as an informative resource for our local area photog-types. Check out all the articles here:  SCPG Articles!

Warning! Don’t edit your work!

A Charlotte Observer photographer was fired recently for submitting an image for print after editing it for color consistency. The paper had printed the silhouette of a fireman on a crane against a firery red sunset and when they discovered his editing of the image (it was originally a lot browner), was let go. The decision was announced subsequently in the paper, also pointing to severe image editing he had done in the past.

The interesting part of this is a matter of some debate as journalists are always editing their work, up until print time. The photogrpaher in question is a renowned photog, and it seemed clear that he was not intentionally trying to mis-represent the image, but did acknolwegde that he was “correcting an intentionally under-exposed shot”. The full story is available here: Photogapher Fired

So where does the line exist between correcting images and editing images? Who knows…

In other news, Saudi Arabia has lifted the ban on public photography, which apparently had been a long standing rule.   The move was admittedly done in an effort to promote tourism and attract visitors to the “birthplace of Islam. More news from Reuters on the subject can be found here: Photography Ban Lifted

And, finally, on a non-political note, DxO labs announced today its own free beta release of its new image editing software. The story can be found here: DxO Software and the download can be found on their website here: DxO Website

Lenses are forever…

Was sifting through my photo mags for the past few months to see if any articles were worth scanning and uploading to the web for sharing. The following article by Herbet Keppler appeared in the June issue of Popular Photography, and talks in detail about the benefits of investing in lenses as opposed to bodies. The newest body may be all the rage, but if you are serious about photography, he suggests you focus your purchases on the lens (or “glass” as they call it in the industry) to get a better long term return on the investment (and happier with the use you’ll get out of it to boot!). Anyway, the article is here for any who are interestedlens3.jpg:

Boone Hall gets a few visitors

Today’s POTD series is a collection of various shots from our excursion out to Boone Hall on Saturday.  The weather was overcast, and approaching storms made for a fun experience.  Some even stayed out trying to catch the lightning behind the main building.  All in all a fun outing.  Jason’s full series of pics are in his gallery (linked right as well) and others have attached some shots in the forums, so stop on over and check them out (feel free to comment too!
